The folk club crew strumming away in the corner and a nice quiet drink in the usually maddest town around, Drumshanbo.

Yesterday in the early evening I went over to the Pieman’s house to get set up for the gig there later that night. Most unusually, the local pub across the road from him had a mess of cars and horse trailers out front. Typically a very quiet spot, there was some crazy country and irish (karaoke? deejay?) music pouring out from the inside. Suddenly, very excited men (the kind that are more used to dealing with cattle and horses than humans) spilled out from the front door involved in dispute. Puffed up words and scrappy blows were exchanged as many men including the barman Dermot, tried to hold down one very angry beast-of-a-man. I missed the part of the fight where Willie stood up the road yelling “Go on Dermot, go on lad!” at the barman as he tried to hold the beast-of-a-man down. But blood was spilled in the streets of Effernagh as the birds minded their business.
